History of Maps
People have been making and using maps for thousands of years - some of the oldest maps, scratched onto clay tablets (slabs), are over 4,000 years old, and were made in Babylonia (modern-day Iraq). The greatest mapmaker of ancient times was a Greek scientist who lived in Egypt, called Ptolemy. (Text taken from the Hutchinson Children's Encyclopedia © Research Machines, plc 2005.)
